ISS Update
Recent activities for the Expedition Five crew, who were transported to the International Space Station on mission STS-111, included work with Space Station science experiments and equipment. Commander Valery Korzun mounted a Russian geophysical experiment onto a window in the Zvezda Service Module. Flight Engineer Peggy Whitson performed the first checkout of the Microgravity Science Glovebox in the U.S. Destiny Laboratory Module. The crew members also began NASA's kidney stone risk evaluation for their stay aboard the Station.

Space Fireworks
NASA's Hubble Space Telescope captured in a recent photo (at left) the glowing gaseous streamers of red, white and blue -- as well as green and pink -- illuminating the heavens. The gaseous streamers were created by one of the biggest firecrackers seen to go off in our galaxy in recorded history, the titanic supernova explosion of a massive star. The light from the exploding star reached Earth 320 years ago, nearly a century before the United States celebrated its birth with a bang. The dead star's shredded remains are called Cassiopeia A, or "Cas A" for short. Read the full story and see the large image at http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/releases/2002/release_2002_139.html.
