Shuttle Update
Columbia — Following inspections of Main Propulsion System (MPS) flow liners that identified three cracks on engine No. 2 liquid hydrogen flow liner, mission managers delayed Columbia’s launch date until a full engineering analysis is complete.

Endeavour
— Eddy current testing of liquid oxygen and hydrogen flow liners are complete. Technicians identified two cracks, the first on engine one and the second on engine two liquid hydrogen flow liners. The cracks are similar to the ones discovered on the other three orbiters. In parallel to the flow liner inspections, Shuttle Endeavour processing continues for its next mission to the International Space Station. Removal of the Multi-Purpose Logistics Module from the payload bay was completed last week.

Atlantis
— Processing continues for launch to the International Space Station. Controller tests are complete on Auxiliary Power Units No. 2 and 3. Left-hand Orbital Maneuvering System (OMS) engine heat shield installation is complete. Inspections of Atlantis identified three cracks on engine No. 1 liquid hydrogen flow liner. All launch dates are under review.

NASA Science
Samples of fire moss that travel onboard the Space Shuttle do something odd: they spiral. Scientists say it’s a clue to the fundamental inner workings of plant cells. Read the full story at the Web site http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2002/16jul_firemoss.htm.

Did You Know. . .
KSC was first designated a Launch Operation Center (LOC) July 1, 1962. To mark the 40th anniversary, the July 12 Spaceport News offers a look back at the beginnings and a glimpse at what's ahead. Also, the KSC web site Multimedia Gallery is collecting a variety of photos (more than 60 photos are already posted) that highlight the places, people and events of the past 40 years (Missile Row, above). Look for the 40th Anniversary link on the right side of the page.
