Shuttle
Update
Following
inspections of Columbia's Main Propulsion System (MPS) flow liners
that identified three cracks on engine No. 2 liquid hydrogen flow
liner, mission managers delayed the launch date until a full engineering
analysis could be completed. Nominal processing has been finished
in preparation for Columbia's research mission.
Processing
continues for Atlantis' launch to the International Space
Station. Orbital Maneuvering System (OMS)/Reaction Control System
(RCS) electrical verification is in work and OMS/RCS flight controls
checkout is complete. Multifunction Electronic Display Subsystem
(MEDS) checkout is scheduled for this week. Atlantis' payload
bay doors were closed last week in preparation for rollover once
the flow liner issue is resolved.
Processing
also continues for Endeavour's launch to the Space Station. The
Multi-Purpose Logistics Module was removed from the payload bay,
as deservicing continues from Endeavour's previous mission. Fuel
cell verification is complete. OMS pod checkout and replacement
of windows No. 6 and 8 are in work. A decision about the flow
liner issue is expected on Friday.
Prevent
Heat-Related Illness
As part of the KSC Heat Stress Prevention Program, SGS-Comprehensive
Health Services Environmental Health maintains a Heat Stress web
site at http://sgs.ksc.nasa.gov/sgs/sites/other/chs/ehs/home/ihheat.cfm.
It has information every employee needs to know for the prevention
of heat illness at work and at home. This time of year heat illnesses
are most likely to occur although they are entirely preventable.
Awareness of the signs and symptoms of heat illness and the precautions
needed for their prevention are important to all who work outdoors
or in hot areas, as well as to those who supervise these activities.
The web site has information you can use to recognize and prevent
heat-related illnesses as well as the current Heat Stress Index.
CHS Environmental Health provides workplace heat stress evaluations
as well as training seminars and "shop talks" for the
Air Force, NASA and their contractors. Please check out the web
page and call 867-2400 for additional information.
