Mission
Update
NASA
managers postponed the launch of Space Shuttle Endeavour on Mission
STS-111/UF2 to June 5 to allow technicians time to change out
a faulty gaseous nitrogen regulator valve in the left Orbital
Maneuvering System pod. Workers at the pad have completed the
removal and replacement of the valve and leak checks are in work.
The weather forecast for Wednesday shows some improvement over
the last several days, but forecasters indicate a 40 percent chance
of weather prohibiting launch on Wednesday due to possible afternoon
thunderstorms and rain showers.
Savings
Bond Campaign
The
2002 U.S. Savings Bonds campaign for federal employees will be
underway June 4 -14. In addition to the Series EE Savings Bonds
available, you can choose the inflation-protected I-bonds. Your
money can now be immune from inflation while still earning competitive
interest rates. Employees can participate in the program by filling
out the traditional enrollment card or by using Employee Express.
For more information, contact Christina Brown at 867-8463.
Recycle
Phone Books
The 2002 Telephone Book Re-cycling Campaign will end June 7. Please
recycle your outdated telephone books by placing them in the outgoing
mailboxes; they will be picked up by the mail carriers. In addition,
two bulk collection dumpsters are designated for recycling your
Bell South telephone books: one is located at the southeast end
of the Headquarters Building and the other dumpster is located
at the southwest end of the OSB Building. If you have more books
than your outgoing mailbox can hold, please place them in a neat
stack on the floor, table or desk next to the mailbox. Please
do not put the telephone books in the trash. Recycle them! If
you have any other questions about recycling your old phone books,
please contact Alice Smith at 867-8454 or Hien Nguyen at 867-8455.
Hurricane
Season Is Here
In a storm situation, KSC could lose all power and computer services.
For this reason the KSC Emergency Preparedness Office has established
a virtual Web site at Marshall Space Flight Center where individuals
who have evacuated the local area in a storm situation can find
out the latest duty status and up-dated information about KSC.
Please bookmark or write down both Web sites (http://ksc-eoc.ksc.nasa.gov
and http://ksc-eoc.msfc.nasa.gov
) on home PCs and laptops that you might carry with you. Call
Wayne M. Kee, CEM KSC Emergency Preparedness Officer, Spaceport
Services Directorate, 321-867-3795 if you have any questions.
Reminder
You must purchase a ticket by June 7 for the BEST BBQ at KARS
II on Friday, June 21 All KSC/CCAFS employees are invited. Food

Did
You Know?
Scientists
hope that an unusual experiment slated for launch on the Space
Shuttle this summer will reveal how plants know up from down.
The seeds of flax plants will be sprouted in orbit to help figure
out how plants sense gravity. Read the full story at http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2002/15may_maggrav.htm?list550276.
