Protecting Sea Turtles from Wildlife
Sea turtles are an endangered species and raccoons cause severe damage to the sea turtle population. To protect the sea turtle, the Merritt Island Wildlife Refugee places "have-a-heart" traps along the beach to trap and relocate raccoons. It is a criminal offense to remove or relocate these traps. Personnel caught doing so are subject to prosecution. If you have any questions or have information about any missing traps, please call the Merritt Island Wildlife Refugee at (321) 861-2369.
