ELV Update

At SAEF-2, the Contour (Comet Nucleus Tour) Mission Simulation was completed last week. This week the spacecraft will be mated to the solid propellant apogee kick motor. CONTOUR will provide the first detailed look into the nucleus of a comet Flying as close as 60 miles (100 kilometers) to at least two comets, Encke and Schwassmann-Wachmann 3, it will take the sharpest pictures yet of the nucleus while analyzing the gas and dust that surround these rocky, icy building blocks of the solar system. Contour is scheduled to be launched July 1 on a Delta II rocket from Pad 17-A, CCAFS.

 



Barbecue To Benefit Lighthouse

The Cape Canaveral Lighthouse Foundation, recently created to assist with the preservation and restoration of the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse, will hold an Inaugural Gathering Barbecue Picnic on the lighthouse grounds on Saturday June 8 from 5 - 8 p.m. There are a limited number of tickets available for KSC employees and their families for a $20 donation per person. This may be credited toward a one-year membership when paid as part of this event. Checks should be made payable to the "Cape Canaveral Lighthouse Foundation." Badged personnel may drive to the lighthouse and use the Hangar C parking lot. Non-badged individuals will be provided bus transportation from Gate 1 of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and must be 16 years of age or older. The barbeque is limited to the first 250 people. To Celebrate Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) Heritage month, the AAPI Working Group has put together a one-hour show and luncheon on May 22. at 11 a.m. in the Training Auditorium. The show will feature traditional Japanese and Indian dances. Afterward, in a tent west of the Training Auditorium, will follow the luncheon, catered by East Garden Restaurant. The menu includes pepper steak, bourbon chicken, veggie delight, pork fried rice or vegetable fried rice, spring rolls, fortune cookies, and your choice of drinks (soda/bottled water). Tickets cost $8 per person.

Did You Know?

SR 3 Bridge Refurbishment Is Scheduled For The End Of May -- The Florida Department of Transportation is in the process of refurbishing the twin mechanical bridges that carry SR 3 over the Barge Canal in Merritt Island. Closure of the Northbound bridge is currently scheduled for the end of May. The bridge is expected to be closed for 5-6 weeks. During this time, both northbound and southbound traffic will utilize the Southbound bridge. Immediately upon completion of the Northbound bridge the Southbound bridge will be closed for 5-6 weeks for refurbishment.
