NASA
officials reveal
human space flight program goals
During the
Aug. 5 press conference NASA leaders explained that Return to
Flight is milestone and safety, not schedule, driven. March 11-April
6 was announced as the first practical launch window. Officials
also emphasized the One-NASA concept and that KSC will continue
contributing to NASA's future.
Stafford-Covey Task Group (SCTG)
holds first public meeting
As part of their three-day KSC visit, the SCTG will answer questions
at the Debus Center Aug. 7 at 11:30 a.m. regarding their independent
review of the Columbia Accident Investigation Board. For further

Anniversary
The Federal Women's Program Working Group (FWPWG) is commemorating
the 83rd anniversary of women's right to vote (Aug. 26, 1920)
by providing voter registration forms. The forms can be obtained
in the HQ Bldg., room 2206, and in the Library, room 1301. You
can also obtain forms on Cape Side at the Cape Canaveral Spaceport
Management Office, Bldg. 55150, room 204. Or you can register
on-line at www.fec.gov/votregis/vr.htm.

KSC Bi-Annual Environmental & Energy Awards Call nominations
due Aug. 22.
Employees are cordially invited to participate in the 2003 KSC
Bi-Annual Environmental & Energy Awards Call. The award is
given to an individual or team recognizing their contributions
and/or successful operations in preserving the environment, conserving
energy, and reserving natural resources while reaching for the
stars. The categories are: (a) Affirmative Procurement, (b) Education,
Outreach, and Awareness, (c) Energy Conservation, (d) Environmental
& Energy Leader, (e) Hazardous Waste, (f) Historic/Archaeological
Preservation, (g) Natural Resources/Habitat Conservation, (h)
Recycling (i) Waste Prevention, and (j) Water Conservation. Nominations
to the Environmental & Energy Awards Program are due by close
of business Friday, Aug. 22, to TA-C3/Barbara Naylor. For nomination
forms contact Barbara Naylor at 867-8452 or e-mail Barbara.A.Naylor@nasa.gov.
The date for the Bi-Annual Awards Ceremony has not been scheduled.
The ceremony should take place sometime in late September or early
October.

Alternative Fueled Vehicles (AFVs)
The
Clean Cities Coalition is administered by the University of Central
Florida/Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC). This is one of several
AFV training programs completed by FSEC and Clean Cities. One
project employees may be interested in is a 3-credit-hour course
on AFVs administered by Brevard Community College, developed by
a grant from the National Science Foundation. The class (EST 1820
46C) is online as a hybrid course with web and classroom instruction.

This class is one of four of an AFV degree program. For more information,

Did
You Know?
During the first week of August 1973, two significant
events occurred: Aug. 5, Mars 6 launched from Baikonour,
Russia; Aug. 9, Mars 7 launched from Baikonour. In 1968,
Explorer 39/49 launched Aug. 8. And in 1963, on Aug. 1,
Mariner 2 completed the first orbit of the sun.
