Mission
Update
The
launch countdown began late Sunday for Shuttle Co-lumbia's Spacehab
microgravity research mission scheduled to launch this Thursday,
Jan. 16. Work continues at Pad 39-A with preparations in work
for loading the liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen into the Power
Reactant Storage and Distribution System. Due to the quantity
and nature of research to be performed on this mission, technicians
began preparations to load late-stow payloads and experiments
into the SPACEHAB module on Monday. The STS-107 crew ar-rived
Sunday. Weather forecasters predict a favorable out-look for a
launch attempt on Thursday, with only a 5 percent chance of weather
prohibiting launch.
ISS
Update
The
activities of the Expedition Six crew aboard the ISS and a preview
of their next spacewalk will be the subjects of a Mission Status
Briefing scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. EST. The briefing
will originate from JSC and participants will include Melissa
Gard, Expedition Six Increment Manager; Norm Knight, ISS Flight
Director; and Daryl Schuck, Expedition Six EVA Officer. The spacewalk
is scheduled to occur on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at approximately 7
a.m. EST. All activities will be aired on NASA TV.
Meanwhile,
ISS crew members are participating in various experiments. Commander
Ken Bowersox provided data to scientists for the FOOT (Foot/Ground
Reaction Forces During Spaceflight) experiment, which looks at
how the arms, hips, knees, legs and feet move in the absence of
gravity, and looks at what changes occur in bones and muscles
during spaceflight. Bowersox wore a special pair of cycling pants
with 20 sensors on his legs and additional sensors on his arms
that took electrical impulse measurements throughout his workday
Tuesday.
All three
crew members participated in a monthly lung-function test, to
study the effects of weightlessness. They will participate in
another session after the spacewalk.
FEW
Scholarships
The Space Coast Chapter of Federally Employed

Karin Biega/XA-A at 867-6382.
Did You Know?
Did You Know? Girls can become engineers too! The Space
Coast Section of the Society of Women's Engineers is hosting
Introducing Girls To Engineering Workshop, to be held
Saturday, Jan. 25, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Merritt Island
High School, 100 East Mustang Way (at Courtenay Parkway).
Registration/Sign-in starts at 8:30. This Program is for
girls in grades 3 - 9. Workshops will provide opportunities
to do fun hands-on experiments re-lated to several engineering
fields; will teach what different types of engineers do;
and will provide all participants an opportunity to meet
and talk with women engineers about how and why they became
engineers. Special sessions are scheduled to assist parents
in helping girls pursue a career in engineering as well
as other technology fields. Parent and students -- Check
out and register on the web site at http://www.swe-sc.org/IGEW
. For assis-tance and additional information, contact
Barbara Hoel-scher (321-268-5888; or barbara.hoelscher@swe.org).
