Update
The
launch of the NASA-sponsored Solar Radiation and Climate Experiment
(SORCE) spacecraft aboard an Orbital Sciences Corporation (OSC)
air-launched Pegasus vehicle (left) is scheduled for deployment
over the Atlantic Ocean from OSC's L-1011 carrier aircraft Saturday,
Jan. 25, at 3:14 p.m. EST. The launch begins with the drop of
the Pegasus rocket from the L-1011 over the Atlantic Ocean at
an altitude of 39,000 feet about 100 miles offshore east-southeast
from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla. The launch is expected
to be visible from the coast. Spacecraft separation from the Pegasus
occurs approximately 10 minutes later. The satellite will orbit
the Earth 15 times each day.

Bi-Annual Environmental & Energy Awards Call
Employees
are once again invited to participate in the 2003 KSC Bi-Annual
Environmental & Energy Awareness Awards Call. The award is
given in honor of exceptional performance to individuals or teams
in making a unique contribution to: the Environmental & Energy
Awareness Program, hazardous waste reduction, energy use reduction,
pollution prevention, affirmative procurement, chemical substitution,
water conservation and enhancing substantial savings recognizing
their achievements and/or successful operations in preserving
the environment, conserving energy, and reserving natural resources
while reaching for the stars. The awards will be presented by
the Center Director to contractor and civil service employees.
Nominations are due to Barbara Naylor/TA-C3 by close of business

or contact Barbara Naylor at 867-8452. The date for the Bi-Annual
Awards Ceremony will take place sometime in mid- to late March.
Snoopy
Awards
Astronauts recently gave Snoopy
awards to KSC employees. Doug Hurley presented the award to Bet
Eldred, BA-C. Bob Behnken presented the award to Judy Damoff,
Boeing. Congratulations to both.
Making
History
Time is running out for America's school kids to name two rovers
being launched to explore Mars. The NASA "Name the Mars Rovers"
contest closes Jan. 31, 2003, so your children still have time
to submit the winning entries. The rovers will launch in Spring
2003 and will land on Mars in January 2004.The contest is a collaborative

Update
Math Skills
Florida Space Institute, in conjunction with the University of
Central Florida, is now offering an "Introduction to Graduate
Mathematics" to all NASA and contractor employees who need
to update their math skills. Dr. Stephen Wiechecki Vergara will
be teaching, starting Jan. 28. Classes will be held every Tuesday
at the Center for Space Education, room ESI-B from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

Did You Know?
The Spaceport HEW Working Group is sponsoring The Spaceport
Health and Wellness Initiative. Learn about weight loss,
exercise, nutrition and healthy lifestyles. Lectures Feb.
4, 5 and 6, will be held noon to 1 p.m., in the Training
Auditorium. Feb. 4 -- "Fitness & Obesity,"
by Kenneth Cooper, M.D., of the Cooper Institute in
Dallas; Feb. 5 -- "Family Involvement in Health
& Fitness," by Dr. Bertice Berry, award-winning
author, lecturer and comedienne; Feb. 6 --"Nutrition
& Weight Control," by Page Love, M.S., R.D.,
of the Gatorade Sports Science Institute.
