Next ELV launch
drawing of spacecraftSpacecraft functional testing is under way this week for the SCISAT-1 launch from Vandenberg AFB. The solar arrays were mated to the spacecraft on July 11. The communications systems were also successfully checked out. The spacecraft transponder is powered on for run time as part of routine test and evaluation. SCISAT will be mated to the Pegasus launch vehicle on July 25. Fairing installation activities begin Aug. 2. Installation onto the Pegasus transporter is scheduled for Aug. 6 followed by rollout to the hot pad and mating to the L-1011 carrier aircraft on Aug. 9. SCISAT-1 weighs approximately 330 pounds and will be placed in a 400-mile-high polar orbit to investigate processes that control the distribution of ozone in the upper atmosphere. The scientific mission of SCISAT-1 is to measure and understand the chemical processes that control the distribution of ozone in the Earth’s atmosphere, particularly at high altitudes. The data from the satellite will provide Canadian and international scientists with improved measurements relating to global ozone processes and help policymakers assess existing environmental policy and de-velop protective measures for improving the health of our atmosphere, preventing further ozone depletion. The mission is designed to last two years.

Program for children of NASA employees planned for July 24
As part of the Take Our Children to Work Day (TOCTWD) activities, NASA employees’ children are invited to a program at the IMAX 2 Theater, KSC Visitor Complex, on July 24 at 8 a.m. Badging for children of NASA employees will continue July 22-23 at the OSB and KSC Headquarters Lobbies between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. NASA employees working at CCAFS can contact Peggy Parrish, JP, at 476-4000 for badges on those dates and times. This special day targets children from 9 to 15. Children under age 9 are not eligible to participate. Children must wear their badge and be with a badged employee at all times. Did You Know?
Living and working on the Space Station is like building one room of a house, moving in a family of three, and asking them to finish building the house while working full time from home.
