Mars
Exploration Rovers
The
second of two Mars Rovers, MER-1, arrived at KSC Tuesday, and
was delivered to the Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility. While
at KSC, each of the rovers, aeroshells and landers will undergo
a full mission simulation. All of these flight elements will then
be integrated. After spin balance testing, each spacecraft will
be mated to a solid propellant upper stage booster that will propel
the spacecraft out of Earth orbit. Approximately 10 days before
launch, they will be transported to Launch Complex 17-A, Cape
Canaveral Air Force Station, for mating with their respective
Boeing Delta II rockets.
Special
opportunities coming
during EEAW Week, April 22-23
Energy 101 Presentation -- Kevin
P. Riley, P.E., from the SGS Energy Management Office, will speak
about energy-related concepts, including the difference between
energy and power. Answer the Who, What, Where, How and Why of
energy at KSC. Place: At the Environmental & Energy
Awareness Tent. Time: 10-10:30 a.m.
Safety and Security of Indoor
Air Quality -- Henry M. Healey, P.E., of Healey and Associates,
will discuss how your IAQ can be compromised and what to do about
it; concrete advice on breathing healthy air at home and at work.
Where: At the Environmental & Energy Awareness Tent.
Time: 10:45-11:15 a.m.
Amnesty Day -- Amnesty Days
during EEAW 2003 will be held at the O&C Parking Area April
22 and at the VAB Parking Lot E April 23. This is an excellent
opportunity for KSC workers to dispose of unwanted Government
chemicals, which may be from any KSC office, shop, laboratory
or POL. All types of chemicals will be accepted except for biohazardous
materials, radioactive materials and explosives. For information,
contact James A. Chappell CHMM, lead environmental engineer, CHS
Waste Operations, 861-1330, or fax 867-9466.
Check Out the E85 Minivan at EEAW
-- The 2000 Dodge Caravan can run on regular gas or E85, a
mixture of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. The ethanol comes from
corn grown in the U.S., a renewable resource. Any vehicle using
the E85 fuel gets slightly reduced mileage and has slightly reduced
power, but the engine's interior remains sparkling clean over
thousands of miles. Exhaust pollutants are greatly reduced. Come
visit the car show and see the E85 Minivan from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Take a Spin on the Segway Human
Transporter -- Come to the Environmental Policy Booth and
sign up to drive a Segway (HT). What is it? It is the first self-balancing,
electric-powered transportation device. The device is narrower
than a standard doorway and is clean and quiet. There are zero
emissions. With dimensions no larger than the average adult body
and the ability to emulate human balance, the Segway HT uses the
same space as a pedestrian and can go wherever a person can walk.
The Segway HT will allow people at home and at work to go farther,
move more quickly, and increase the amount they can carry anywhere
they currently walk. For commercial settings, it is ideally suited
for large scale manufacturing plants and warehousing operations,
travel and tourism, public safety, corporate and campus transportation,
as well as mail, package and product delivery.
