STS-107 crew memorialized in Space Memorial Mirror
Witness STS-107 crew tribute –
The names of the STS-107 crew members will be engraved in the Space Mirror Memorial and unveiled Oct. 28 at 9:30 a.m. The Mirror is our nation’s memorial to astronauts who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The Columbia crew’s family members are returning to KSC to participate. Leaders including Center Director Jim Kennedy, Reps. Dave Weldon and Tom Feeney, and Associate Administrator, Office of Space Flight, Bill Readdy will contribute. The event, hosted by the Astronaut Memorial Foundation, has many special tributes planned , including a missing man formation flight piloted by astronauts. Only invited guests may attend, but all can share the moment via NASA Direct! and NASA TV. For more information, visit www.nasa.gov/multimedia/highlights/index.html/. Or call 867-2468. A Web link providing coverage can be accessed at www.nasa.gov/ .

ELV Update
Solar array installation started yesterday on the Gravity Probe B spacecraft. With the Delta II first and second stages erected on the launch pad, integrated testing of the vehicle has been under way. Last week qualification testing began on the Redundant Inertial Flight Control Assembly (RIFCA), the navigation and guidance control unit for the Delta II. The tests simulate launch conditions in the unique helium environment that will be created within the payload fairing by the spacecraft. On Oct. 29, routine integrated guidance and control system checkout of the vehicle will get underway.

Did You Know ?

Energy Tip – Water heating is the second largest energy consumer in most homes, using more than 15 percent of the total energy used. You can help reduce energy use – and save money – at home by:
— Conserving hot water. Cut hot water use in half by installing water conserving showerheads and faucet aera-tors. A family of four, each showering five minutes a day, will use about 700 gallons per week. Water conserving showerheads and faucet aerators can save that family 14,000 gallons of water a year, and the energy required to heat the water.
— Repairing leaky faucets. Even a small water drip can waste energy and money.
—Insulating pipes. A great deal of energy and water is wasted waiting for hot water to reach a tap. Insulating your hot water pipes reduces losses as the hot water flows to your faucet, and, more importantly, reduces standby losses when the tap is turned off and then back on again within an hour or so. Reduce heat loss by insulating the first few feet of the cold water pipe at the top of the tank.
