The astronauts have specific seating designations for each launch. Often the seating arrangement is changed for reentry. There can be up to four seats on the Flight Deck and four seats in the Mid Deck area.

The commander of the Shuttle flight is always seated in S1 and the pilot in S2, the mission specialists and International Space Station crews can be seated in any of the remaining six seats.
