KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. Image of Shuttle with American Flag and launch complex in background(File Footage) – About 8 minutes, 30 seconds into the liftoff, the Shuttle's main engines shut down and the external tank is jettisoned. Shortly after the Shuttle reaches orbit, the crew opens the payload bay doors and mission activities begin.
