KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. -– Image of Shuttle with American flag and launch complex in the background. At Launch Pad 39A, the STS-109 crew takes part in the Terminal Countdown Demonstration Test. During the test, the fully-suited astronauts exit the Operations & Checkout Building and depart for the launch pad. Once at the pad, they participate in a simulated countdown, followed by emergency walkdown training in the slidewire baskets that would carry them to safety in the event of an evacuation.
