Orbiter:
Endeavour
Shuttle
Mission: STS-111
Date: June 5, 2002
KENNEDY
SPACE CENTER, Fla. -– About
seven minutes before launch, the Orbiter Access Arm is retracted
from Shuttle Endeavour. Four minutes later, the orbiter's aerosurfaces
and main engines are rotated. The Gaseous Oxygen Vent Arm, which
prevents the oxygen vapors exiting the top of the External Tank
from forming ice, is retracted. Finally, Space Shuttle Endeavour
erupts from the cloud of smoke below and roars into space on
mission STS-111 to the International Space Station. Mission
STS-111 is the 18th flight of Endeavour and the 110th flight
overall in NASA's Space Shuttle program. On mission STS-111,
astronauts will deliver the Leonardo Multi-Purpose Logistics
Module, the Mobile Base System (MBS), and the Expedition Five
crew to the Space Station.
