      KENNEDY SPACE CENTER SPACE SHUTTLE STATUS REPORT MONDAY, DECEMBER 2, 1996 (2:26 PM EST) KSC Public Affairs Contact: Bruce Buckingham (fax 407-867-2692) E-mail: Bruce.Buckingham-1@kmail.ksc.nasa.gov MISSION: STS-80 -- WAKE SHIELD FACILITY-3 (image) and ORFEUS-SPAS-2 (image) Flight Day 14 VEHICLE: Columbia/OV-102 LOCATION: in orbit LAUNCH DATE/TIME: November 19 at 2:55.47 p.m. EST (new)TARGET KSC LANDING DATE/TIME: December 6 at about 7:57 a.m. EST MISSION DURATION: 16 days, 17 hours, 2 minutes CREW: Cockrell, Rominger, Jernigan, Jones, Musgrave ORBITAL ALTITUDE and INCLINATION: 219 statute miles/28.45 degrees NOTE: Mission managers today decided to extend Columbia's mission by 24 hours to allow for additional observations from the free-flying ORFEUS-SPAS ultraviolet astronomy satellite. Landing is now set for Friday, Dec. 6, at about 7:57 a.m., at KSC. Based on this mission extension, berthing of ORFEUS-SPAS is set for about 7:56 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4. The solid rocket booster nozzles arrived in Utah this weekend. Detailed inspections will occur over the next few days. MISSION: STS-81 -- 5th MIR DOCKING & SPACEHAB DM (image) VEHICLE: Atlantis/OV-104 LOCATION: Orbiter Processing Facility bay 3 TARGET KSC LAUNCH DATE/TIME: Jan. 12, 1997 at about 4:17 a.m. (EST) LAUNCH WINDOW: 7-10 minutes TARGET KSC LANDING DATE/TIME: Jan. 21, 1997 at about 8:40 a.m. MISSION DURATION: 9 days (+1) CREW: Baker, Jett, Grunsfeld, Ivins, Wisoff, Linenger (up) Blaha (down) ORBITAL ALTITUDE and INCLINATION: 184 statute miles/51.6 degrees NOTE: At the time of payload bay door closing last week, engineers found a small indention on a strut on the floor of the payload bay. The strut was replaced over the weekend and the payload bay doors are now set to be closed this afternoon. A pressure check of the aft engine compartment is in work today following aft close-outs which were completed this weekend. In light of the airlock concerns aboard Columbia, additional checks of Atlantis' airlock were conducted with no problems found. Rollover to the Vehicle Assembly Building is currently targeted for midnight Wednesday night. Once in the VAB, Atlantis will be mated to the external tank and solid rocket boosters. Rollout to Pad 39B is set for Dec. 10. KEY STS-81 OPERATIONAL MILESTONES (dates are target only): Orbiter roll to Vehicle Assembly Building (12:01 a.m. Dec. 5) Deliver Spacehab to pad (Dec. 6) Roll out Shuttle Atlantis to Pad 39B (Dec. 10) Hot fire all three auxiliary power units (Dec. 11) Terminal Countdown Demonstration Test (Dec. 16-17) MISSION: STS-82 -- HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE SERVICING MISSION-2 VEHICLE: Discovery/OV-103 LOCATION: Orbiter Processing Facility bay 2 TARGET LAUNCH DATE/TIME: February 13, 1997 at 2:59 a.m. LAUNCH WINDOW: 61 minutes TARGET KSC LANDING DATE/TIME: February 23, 1997 at 1:35 a.m. MISSION DURATION: 9 days, 22 hours CREW: Bowersox, Horowitz, Lee, Hawley, Harbaugh, Smith, Tanner ORBITAL ALTITUDE and INCLINATION: 360 statute miles/28.45 degrees NOTE: In light of the airlock concerns aboard Columbia, additional checks of Discovery's airlock were conducted this past weekend with no problems found. Payload-to-orbiter pre-mate checks are now in work and hydraulic operations involving the main landing gear and the brakes are set to begin tomorrow. The payload bay doors are scheduled to be closed Dec. 16. The Crew Equipment Interface Test is set for this weekend. Stacking of the solid rocket boosters for mission STS-82 continues in the Vehicle Assembly Building. The external tank will be mated to the boosters early next week.
