KENNEDY SPACE CENTER SPACE SHUTTLE STATUS REPORT TUESDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1996 (10:30 AM EST) KSC Public Affairs Contact: Bruce Buckingham (fax 407-867-2692) E-mail: Bruce.Buckingham-1@kmail.ksc.nasa.gov MISSION: STS-80 -- WAKE SHIELD FACILITY-3 (image) and ORFEUS-SPAS-2 (image) Flight Day 15 VEHICLE: Columbia/OV-102 LOCATION: in orbit LAUNCH DATE/TIME: November 19 at 2:55.47 p.m. EST (new) TARGET KSC LANDING DATE/TIME: December 6 at about 8:02 a.m. EST (new) MISSION DURATION: 16 days, 17 hours, 7 minutes CREW: Cockrell, Rominger, Jernigan, Jones, Musgrave ORBITAL ALTITUDE and INCLINATION: 219 statute miles/28.45 degrees NOTE: Yesterday, mission managers extended Columbia's mission by 24 hours to allow for additional observations from the free-flying ORFEUS-SPAS ultraviolet astronomy satellite. Landing is set for Friday, Dec. 6, at 8:02 a.m., at KSC. Based on this mission extension, berthing of ORFEUS-SPAS in the orbiter's payload bay is set for about 7:39 a.m. tomorrow. The STS-80 RSRM nozzles arrived in Utah last weekend and have undergone an initial inspection. These initial inspections indicated the pocketing and wash erosion on the STS-80 RSRM nozzles was less extensive than the erosion observed on STS-79. There were approximately 20-30 pocketing/wash erosion indications on the left-hand and right-hand STS-80 nozzles compared to the 60 indications on STS-79 right-hand nozzle. More detailed inspections will continue over the next several weeks. MISSION: STS-81 -- 5th MIR DOCKING & SPACEHAB DM (image) VEHICLE: Atlantis/OV-104 LOCATION: Orbiter Processing Facility bay 3 TARGET KSC LAUNCH DATE/TIME: Jan. 12, 1997 at about 4:17 a.m. (EST) LAUNCH WINDOW: 7-10 minutes (new) TARGET KSC LANDING DATE/TIME: Jan. 22, 1997 at about 7:52 a.m. (new) MISSION DURATION: 10 days, 3 hours, 30 minutes CREW: Baker, Jett, Grunsfeld, Ivins, Wisoff, Linenger (up) Blaha (down) ORBITAL ALTITUDE and INCLINATION: 184 statute miles/51.6 degrees NOTE: Due to a requirement from managers to further check the airlock on Atlantis, the payload bay doors were not closed yesterday. Closure of the doors is expected to occur early tomorrow morning after a series of orbiter docking system cycle checks are complete and X-rays on the hatch mechanisms are performed today. These additional inspections are necessary for trouble-shooting the problem with Columbia's airlock on orbit. As a result of this additional work, rollover of Atlantis to the Vehicle Assembly Building has been delayed a day and is now targeted for midnight Thursday night. Once in the VAB, Atlantis will be mated to the external tank and solid rocket boosters. Rollout to Pad 39B has been rescheduled for Dec. 11. KEY STS-81 OPERATIONAL MILESTONES (dates are target only): Orbiter roll to Vehicle Assembly Building (12:01 a.m. Dec. 6) Deliver Spacehab to pad (Dec. 6) Roll out Shuttle Atlantis to Pad 39B (Dec. 11) Hot fire all three auxiliary power units (Dec. 12) Terminal Countdown Demonstration Test (Dec. 16-17) MISSION: STS-82 -- HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE SERVICING MISSION-2 VEHICLE: Discovery/OV-103 LOCATION: Orbiter Processing Facility bay 2 TARGET LAUNCH DATE/TIME: February 13, 1997 at 2:59 a.m. LAUNCH WINDOW: 61 minutes TARGET KSC LANDING DATE/TIME: February 23, 1997 at 1:35 a.m. MISSION DURATION: 9 days, 22 hours CREW: Bowersox, Horowitz, Lee, Hawley, Harbaugh, Smith, Tanner ORBITAL ALTITUDE and INCLINATION: 360 statute miles/28.45 degrees NOTE: Payload-to-orbiter pre-mate checks are complete and hydraulic operations involving the main landing gear and brakes are underway today. The Crew Equipment Interface Test is set for this weekend. The payload bay doors are scheduled to be closed Dec. 16. Stacking of the solid rocket boosters for mission STS-82 is complete. The external tank will be mated to the boosters early next week in the Vehicle Assembly Building.
