      KENNEDY SPACE CENTER SPACE SHUTTLE STATUS REPORT WEDNESDAY, JULY 17, 1996 (3:39 PM EDT) KSC Public Affairs Contact: Joel Wells (fax 407-867-2692) E-mail: J.Wells-1@kmail.ksc.nasa.gov MISSION: STS-79 -- 4th MIR DOCKING & SPACEHAB DM VEHICLE: Atlantis/OV-104 LOCATION: Vehicle Assembly Building TARGET LAUNCH DATE/TIME: Sept. 12, 1996 at about 6:30 a.m. EDT TARGET KSC LANDING DATE/TIME: Sept. 21, 1996 at about 11:30 a.m. EDT MISSION DURATION: Approximately 9 days, 5 hours CREW SIZE: 6 ORBITAL ALTITUDE and INCLINATION: 196-245 statute miles/51.6 degrees NOTE: Today KSC launch managers recommended a launch date of Sept. 12 for Space Shuttle Atlantis. NASA program managers will review this recommendation and announce a target launch date later this week. The left forward center booster segment mate will be complete today. The left booster stack will be complete by the end of this week and work on the right booster will begin next week. The vehicle will be powered up late today or early tomorrow. MISSION: STS-80 -- WAKE SHIELD FACILITY-3 and ORFEUS-SPAS-2 VEHICLE: Columbia/OV-102 LOCATION: Orbiter Processing Facility bay 1 TARGET LAUNCH DATE: Oct. 31, 1996 (with possible one week delay) TARGET KSC LANDING DATE: Nov. 16, 1996 (with possible one week delay) MISSION DURATION: 16 days CREW SIZE: 5 ORBITAL ALTITUDE and INCLINATION: 218 statute miles/28.45 degrees NOTE: Spacelab removal is complete. The forward reaction control system functional checkout is in work. KEY OPERATIONAL MILESTONES (dates are target only): * Removal of auxiliary power unit No.1 (July 26) * Begin removing Space Shuttle main engines (July 30) MISSION: STS-82 -- HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE SERVICING MISSION-2 VEHICLE: Discovery/OV-103 LOCATION: Orbiter Processing Facility bay 2 TARGET LAUNCH DATE: Feb. 13, 1997 LAUNCH WINDOW: 61 minutes TARGET LANDING DATE: Feb. 23, 1997 MISSION DURATION: 9 days, 22 hours CREW SIZE: 7 ORBITAL ALTITUDE and INCLINATION: 360 statute miles/28.45 degrees NOTE: The storage checkout and transportation flanges have been removed for use during Endeavour’s ferry flight to Palmdale, CA. The payload bay doors are open for work to be done in the orbiter’s midbody. OPERATIONAL MILESTONES (dates are target only): * Install right hand orbital maneuvering system pod (about July 26) PREPARATIONS FOR ORBITER MAINTENANCE DOWN PERIOD VEHICLE: Endeavour/OV-105 LOCATION: Orbiter Processing Facility bay 3 NOTE: Preparations continue for Endeavour’s first Orbiter Maintenance Down Period in Palmdale, CA. Work to deservice the ammonia boiler is complete. Installation of the left orbital maneuvering system simulator pod is scheduled for Thursday. KEY PRE-OMDP OPERATIONAL MILESTONES (dates are target only): * Final payload bay closure (today) * Rollover to Shuttle Landing Facility (July 29) * Depart KSC for ferry flight to Palmdale, CA (July 30)
