KENNEDY SPACE CENTER SPACE SHUTTLE STATUS REPORT TUESDAY, JULY 30, 1996 (10:41 AM EDT) KSC Public Affairs Contact: Bruce Buckingham (fax 407-867-2692) E-mail: Bruce.Buckingham-1@kmail.ksc.nasa.gov MISSION: STS-79 -- 4th MIR DOCKING & SPACEHAB DM VEHICLE: Atlantis/OV-104 LOCATION: Vehicle Assembly Building TARGET LAUNCH DATE/TIME: September 12 at about 6:26 a.m. (EDT) LAUNCH WINDOW: 7-10 minutes TARGET KSC LANDING DATE/TIME: September 21 at about 11:30 a.m. MISSION DURATION: 9 days, 5 hours CREW SIZE: 6 ORBITAL ALTITUDE and INCLINATION: 196-245 statute miles/51.6 degrees NOTE: The right forward center segment has been mated to the booster stack in the Vehicle Assembly Building and the follow-on leak check of the stacked segments is complete and good. The right forward segment of the replacement SRBs was scheduled to be mated to the stack today. However, damage to a vent port plug must be repaired and stacking operations are in a temporary hold. The repairs will be conducted later today. Booster stacking will be completed this weekend and the external tank is now scheduled to be mated to the stack Sunday. Atlantis remains in the Vehicle Assembly Building while stacking operations of the replacement set of solid rocket boosters (SRB) continues in the adjacent high bay. Due to the stacking schedule, Atlantis will be destacked from the original set of SRBs early Thursday morning and transported to OPF bay no. 3 Thursday evening. Atlantis will return to the VAB on Aug. 13 to be mated to the new stack. KEY STS-79 OPERATIONAL MILESTONES (dates are target only): Demate orbiter from current SRB stack and move to OPF bay 3 (Thursday) Mate external tank to solid rocket boosters (Sunday) Transport orbiter to VAB and mate with new set of solid rocket boosters (Aug. 13) Roll out Space Shuttle to Pad 39A (Aug. 20) STS-79 Terminal Countdown Demonstration Test (Aug. 27-28) MISSION: STS-80 -- WAKE SHIELD FACILITY-3 and ORFEUS-SPAS-2 VEHICLE: Columbia/OV-102 LOCATION: Orbiter Processing Facility bay 1 TARGET LAUNCH DATE/TIME: (no earlier than) Oct. 31 at 2:40 p.m. (EST) LAUNCH WINDOW: 2 hours, 20 minutes TARGET KSC LANDING DATE/TIME: (no earlier than) Nov. 16 at 7:25 a.m. MISSION DURATION: 16 days CREW SIZE: 5 ORBITAL ALTITUDE and INCLINATION: 218 statute miles/28.45 degrees NOTE: The remote manipulator system has been installed into Columbia's payload bay and the system is being checked and tested this week. KEY OPERATIONAL MILESTONES (dates are target only): Complete installation of right hand orbital maneuvering system pod (about Aug. 7) Install remote manipulator system (Aug. 20) Install forward reaction control system (about Aug. 28) ENDEAVOUR -- PREPARATIONS FOR ORBITER MAINTENANCE DOWN PERIOD (OMDP) VEHICLE: Endeavour/OV-105 LOCATION: En route to Palmdale, CA NOTE: Endeavour, bolted atop the modified 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA), departed KSC at about 6:55 a.m. today en route to Palmdale. CA. The orbiter/SCA arrived at Kelly AFB, San Antonio, TX, at about 10:10 a.m. EDT for a brief refueling stop. Pending weather, Endeavour will continue to Palmdale this afternoon. Endeavour is being sent to Palmdale for its first Orbiter Maintenance Down Period which is scheduled to last about eight months.-- end -- NOTE: MISSION STS-81, ATLANTIS, IS TARGETED FOR LAUNCH ABOUT JAN. 16, 1997.
