      KENNEDY SPACE CENTER SPACE SHUTTLE STATUS REPORT FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1996 (2:11 PM EDT) KSC Public Affairs Contact: Bruce Buckingham E-mail: Bruce.Buckingham-1@kmail.ksc.nasa.gov MISSION: STS-80 -- WAKE SHIELD FACILITY-3 (image) and ORFEUS-SPAS-2 (image) VEHICLE: VEHICLE: Columbia/OV-102 LOCATION: Pad 39B (new) TARGET LAUNCH DATE/TIME: no earlier than November 15 at 2:50 p.m. LAUNCH WINDOW: 2 hours, 30 minutes (new) TARGET KSC LANDING DATE/TIME: December 1 at 7:34 a.m. MISSION DURATION: 15 days, 16 hours, 48 minutes CREW: Cockrell, Rominger, Jernigan, Jones, Musgrave ORBITAL ALTITUDE and INCLINATION: 219 statute miles/28.45 degrees NOTE: Mission managers will meet on Monday afternoon for the follow-up Flight Readiness Review at which time they will review the acceptability for flight of the solid rocket boosters and their nozzles. Launch was delayed a week when managers, reviewing data from mission STS-79, saw unusual erosion in one of the booster's nozzle insulation material. Extra time was required to permit managers an opportunity to fully understand the issue. Also, managers will assess an issue regarding Columbia's fuel cells. A suspect technique used to assemble the fuel cell's regulator diaphragm, which is internal to the cell, is being reviewed. Managers will meet at 1 p.m. EST Monday for the Flight Readiness Review and announce plans to continue with launch operations targeted for no earlier than Friday, Nov. 15. Pending this decision, the STS-80 crew will be standing by in Houston for word to leave for KSC. Arrival at KSC's Shuttle Landing Facility is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 11, at about 6:30 p.m. EST. The countdown for launch is set to begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday, pending management approval. KEY STS-80 OPERATIONAL MILESTONES (dates are target only): Complete aft engine compartment close-outs (Saturday) Follow-up Flight Readiness Review (1 p.m. Monday) Crew arrival at KSC (6:30 p.m. Monday) Countdown begins (no earlier than Nov. 12) MISSION: STS-81 -- 5th MIR DOCKING & SPACEHAB DM (image) VEHICLE: Atlantis/OV-104 LOCATION: Orbiter Processing Facility bay TARGET KSC LAUNCH DATE/TIME: Jan. 12, 1997 at about 4:17 a.m. (EST) LAUNCH WINDOW: 7-10 minutes TARGET KSC LANDING DATE/TIME: Jan. 21, 1997 at about 8:40 a.m. MISSION DURATION: 9 days (+1) CREW: Baker, Jett, Grunsfeld, Ivins, Wisoff, Linenger (up) Blaha (down) ORBITAL ALTITUDE and INCLINATION: 184 statute miles/51.6 degrees NOTE: Auxiliary power unit No. 2 wiring work is complete. A retest of the system will be conducted next week. Main engine securing will continue through next week. Stacking of the STS-81 solid rocket boosters in the Vehicle Assembly Building will be completed this weekend. The external tank will be mated to the boosters about Nov. 14. External air lock checks will continue through next week. Stacking of the solid rocket boosters for mission STS-82 will continue next week in the Vehicle Assembly Building.
