KENNEDY SPACE CENTER SPACE SHUTTLE STATUS REPORT WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1996 (11:31 AM EST) Launch - 2 days KSC Public Affairs Contact: Bruce Buckingham (fax 407-867-2692) E-mail: Bruce.Buckingham-1@kmail.ksc.nasa.gov MISSION: STS-80 -- WAKE SHIELD FACILITY-3 (image) and ORFEUS-SPAS-2 (image) VEHICLE: Columbia/OV-102 LOCATION: Pad 39B TARGET LAUNCH DATE/TIME: November 15 at 2:50 p.m. LAUNCH WINDOW: 2 hours, 30 minutes TARGET KSC LANDING DATE/TIME: December 1 at 7:34 a.m. MISSION DURATION: 15 days, 16 hours, 44 minutes CREW: Cockrell, Rominger, Jernigan, Jones, Musgrave ORBITAL ALTITUDE and INCLINATION: 219 statute miles/28.45 degrees NOTE: The countdown for launch of Columbia began on time yesterday at 1 p.m. and today is proceeding without problem. The issue with a minor fuel cell coolant loop leak was addressed by the management team yesterday and cleared for flight. No other technical issues are being addressed at this time. Pad 39-B was cleared at about 9 a.m. today to load the onboard cryogenic tanks with liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen reactants. Reactant loading will be complete at about 7 p.m. The reactants provide electricity for the orbiter and crew while in space and drinking water as a by-product for the 16-day mission. Tomorrow, operations will begin to demate the orbiter's mid-body umbilical unit and retract it into the Fixed Service Structure. Final vehicle and facility close-outs will also resume. Final mid-deck payload stowage operations will begin following cryogenic loading operations. Also on Thursday, preparations will be made to retract the Rotating Service Structure to launch position at about 8 p.m. Loading of the external tank with cryogenic propellants is scheduled to begin at about 6 a.m. Friday. The launch of STS-80 on Friday is contingent on a commercial Atlas rocket launch planned for today between 3:44 and 5:18 p.m. If the Atlas launch is delayed a day, an additional 24-hour hold will be implemented at the T-11 hour mark and the Shuttle launch delayed until Saturday, Nov. 16, at 2:51 p.m. Air Force weather forecasters are currently indicating a 90 percent probability of weather prohibiting launch of Columbia on Friday. The primary concern is for high winds violating return-to-launch-site abort constraints with occasional low clouds and showers in the area. There is also a possibility of pad winds violating launch constraints. During Friday's launch window, the winds at KSC are expected to be from the northeast at 20 knots gusting to 30 knots; temperature 73 degrees F; visibility 7 miles; humidity 77 percent; and clouds scattered to broken at 4,000 feet and broken at 12,000 feet and 25,000 feet. The 24-hour and 48-hour-delay forecasts reveal similar conditions and an 80 percent and 70 percent chance of violation, respectively. Please refer to KSC Release No. 133-96 for more information on Shuttle weather launch commit criteria.
