KENNEDY SPACE CENTER SPACE SHUTTLE STATUS REPORT THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 1996 (11:36 AM EST) KSC Public Affairs Contact: Bruce Buckingham (fax 407-867-2692) E-mail: Bruce.Buckingham-1@kmail.ksc.nasa.gov MISSION: STS-80 -- WAKE SHIELD FACILITY-3 (image) and ORFEUS-SPAS-2 (image) VEHICLE: Columbia/OV-102 LOCATION: Pad 39B (new) TARGET LAUNCH DATE/TIME: November 19 at 2:53 p.m. EST LAUNCH WINDOW: 2 hours, 30 minutes (new) TARGET KSC LANDING DATE/TIME: December 5 at 7:37 a.m. MISSION DURATION: 15 days, 16 hours, 44 minutes CREW: Cockrell, Rominger, Jernigan, Jones, Musgrave ORBITAL ALTITUDE and INCLINATION: 219 statute miles/28.45 degrees NOTE: Following yesterday's scrub announcement of the Atlas commercial rocket launch at Cape Canaveral Air Station, Shuttle mission managers announced that launch of Columbia on mission STS-80 must also be delayed, as was previously understood. However, due to forecasts of extremely poor launch weather this weekend, which primarily focuses on high winds, managers decided to further delay Columbia's launch until more favorable weather is likely. As a result, managers late yesterday announced that mission STS-80 will target a new launch date of Tuesday, Nov. 19. The launch window on Tuesday opens at 2:53 p.m. EST. To achieve this, launch controllers have reset the countdown clock to the build-in hold point at the T-19 hour mark. The clock will remain at T-19 hours until 1 a.m. Monday. Operations at the pad today will continue as scheduled with the off-loading of extra cryogenics not necessary for this flight from the extended duration orbiter pallet in the orbiter's payload bay. Following this work, the orbiter mid-body umbilical unit will be demated and retracted into the pad's Fixed Service Structure. For the remainder of the hold and through the weekend, controllers in the firing room will closely monitor the orbiter's systems while remaining in a launch configuration. Only limited work will be performed at the pad until the countdown begins again Monday. The payload bay doors will remain closed as the Wake Shield Facility and ORFEUS-SPAS payloads require no additional servicing. No official forecast for Tuesday's weather is available at this time. The flight crew will remain at KSC through the weekend spending their time flying in the Shuttle Training Aircraft and reviewing mission plans.
