These characteristic patterns appear much less prevalent and distinct than the STS-79 wash and appear consistent with previous performance. The nozzles will be shipped to Utah by truck as early as tomorrow to support a more detailed inspection. MISSION: STS-81 -- 5th MIR DOCKING & SPACEHAB DM (image) VEHICLE: Atlantis/OV-104 LOCATION: Orbiter Processing Facility bay 3 TARGET KSC LAUNCH DATE/TIME: Jan. 12, 1997 at about 4:22 a.m. (EST) LAUNCH WINDOW: 7-10 minutes TARGET KSC LANDING DATE/TIME: Jan. 21, 1997 at about 8:45 a.m. MISSION DURATION: 9 days (+1) CREW: Baker, Jett, Grunsfeld, Ivins, Wisoff, Linenger (up) Blaha (down) ORBITAL ALTITUDE and INCLINATION: 184 statute miles/51.6 degrees NOTE: Close-outs for the replacement fuel cell No. 2 are complete. Preparations to roll Atlantis to the Vehicle Assembly Building continue. Final payload bay door closure is scheduled for noon today and aft compartment close-outs are in work. Final configuration of the Shuttle main propulsion system and main engines will pickup on Monday morning. External tank and solid rocket booster close-outs continue in work in the Vehicle Assembly Building. The payload bay doors are scheduled to be closed Dec. 16. After checking the fit of the new light-weight commander and pilot seats, technicians determined that a rework of the floor beneath the seats would be necessary. Mating of the left hand Orbiter Maneuvering System pod and subsequent interface verification tests are scheduled today. Work continues to install the SSME heat shield. Stacking of the solid rocket boosters for mission STS-82 continues in the Vehicle Assembly Building. The right forward center segment mate is complete and transfer of the right forward segment to the VAB is in work. The external tank will be mated to the solid rocket boosters during the first week of December.
