MISSION: STS-81 -- 5th MIR DOCKING & SPACEHAB DM (image) VEHICLE: Atlantis/OV-104 LOCATION: Orbiter Processing Facility bay 3 TARGET KSC LAUNCH DATE/TIME: Jan. 12, 1997 at about 4:22 a.m. (EST) LAUNCH WINDOW: 7-10 minutes TARGET KSC LANDING DATE/TIME: Jan. 21, 1997 at about 8:45 a.m. MISSION DURATION: 9 days (+1) CREW: Baker, Jett, Grunsfeld, Ivins, Wisoff, Linenger (up) Blaha (down) ORBITAL ALTITUDE and INCLINATION: 184 statute miles/51.6 degrees NOTE: Preparations to roll Atlantis to the Vehicle Assembly Building continue. Atlantis’ payload bay doors were closed yesterday and close-outs of the forward and aft compartments are in work. During midbody close-outs workers discovered a ding on the freon loop bellows. Managers plan to repair the ding by wrapping the problem area with Kevlar and epoxy. The repair work is not expected to impact Atlantis’ launch schedule. Final configuration of the Shuttle main propulsion system and main engines is complete. External tank and solid rocket booster close-outs continue in work in the Vehicle Assembly Building. KEY STS-81 OPERATIONAL MILESTONES (dates are target only): * Roll to Vehicle Assembly Building (midnight Dec. 4) * Roll out to Pad 39B (Dec. 10) * Terminal Countdown Demonstration Test (Dec. 16-17) * Flight Readiness Review (Jan. 6) MISSION: STS-82 -- HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE SERVICING MISSION-2 VEHICLE: Discovery/OV-103 LOCATION: Orbiter Processing Facility bay 2 TARGET LAUNCH DATE/TIME: February 13, 1997 at 2:59 a.m. LAUNCH WINDOW: 61 minutes TARGET KSC LANDING DATE/TIME: February 23, 1997 at 1:35 a.m. MISSION DURATION: 9 days, 22 hours CREW: Bowersox, Horowitz, Lee, Hawley, Harbaugh, Smith, Tanner ORBITAL ALTITUDE and INCLINATION: 360 statute miles/28.45 degrees NOTE: Fuel cell leak checks began yesterday. The payload bay doors are scheduled to be closed Dec. 16. Securing of the left hand Orbital Maneuvering System pod is in work. Installation of the SSME heat shield is complete. Stacking of the solid rocket boosters for mission STS-82 continues in the Vehicle Assembly Building. The right forward segment is static in the VAB and mating operations will begin this afternoon. The external tank will be mated to the solid rocket boosters during the first week of December.
