Tomorrow, the payload bay doors will be opened and access gained to the payloads for final checks. The payload doors will be closed for flight on Nov. 6 after final servicing is complete. On Sunday, the flight readiness test of the main propulsion system is scheduled. Countdown preparations will be conducted next week. KEY STS-80 OPERATIONAL MILESTONES (dates are target only): Load hypergolic reactants into Columbia's reaction control system (Thursday/Friday) Main engine flight readiness test (Oct. 27) Flight Readiness Review (Oct. 28) MISSION: STS-81 -- 5th MIR DOCKING & SPACEHAB DM (image) VEHICLE: Atlantis/OV-104 LOCATION: Orbiter Processing Facility bay 3 TARGET KSC LAUNCH DATE/TIME: Jan. 12, 1997 at about 4:17 a.m. (EST) LAUNCH WINDOW: 7-10 minutes TARGET KSC LANDING DATE/TIME: Jan. 21, 1997 at about 8:40 a.m. MISSION DURATION: 9 days (+1) CREW: Baker, Jett, Grunsfeld, Ivins, Wisoff, Linenger (up) Blaha (down) ORBITAL ALTITUDE and INCLINATION: 184 statute miles/51.6 degrees NOTE: Functional testing of the forward reaction control system is complete and good and operations to replace the wiring between APU No. 2 and its controller continue today. Drag chute installation also resumes today. Stacking of the solid rocket boosters continues in the VAB. KEY STS-81 OPERATIONAL MILESTONES (dates are target only): Install Space Shuttle main engines (Nov. 4-5) Crew Equipment Interface Test (Nov. 9) MISSION: STS-82 -- HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE SERVICING MISSION-2 VEHICLE: Discovery/OV-103 LOCATION: Orbiter Processing Facility bay 2 TARGET LAUNCH DATE/TIME: February 13, 1997 at 2:59 a.m. LAUNCH WINDOW: 61 minutes TARGET KSC LANDING DATE/TIME: February 23, 1997 at 1:35 a.m. MISSION DURATION: 9 days, 22 hours CREW: Bowersox, Horowitz, Lee, Hawley, Harbaugh, Smith, Tanner ORBITAL ALTITUDE and INCLINATION: 360 statute miles/28.45 degrees NOTE: Work to secure the main engines continues this week. Servicing of the ammonia boiler system is under way today. The payload bay doors are closed for scheduled thermal protection system work. Delivery of the left-hand orbital maneuvering system pod to the OPF has been rescheduled for Nov. 4. KEY STS-82 OPERATIONAL MILESTONES (dates are target only): Open payload bay doors (Oct. 29) Deliver left-hand orbital maneuvering system pod to OPF and install on vehicle (Nov. 4) NOTE: About three weeks ago, the Firex water deluge system in the Hypergolic Maintenance Facility (HMF) inadvertently came on while work was being performed on an orbital maneuvering system (OMS) pod (see the Oct. 4, 1996 status report). The pod is scheduled for use on Columbia on mission STS-83. An investigative board headed by United Space Alliance (USA) and made up of representatives from NASA and USA determined that a switch was inadvertently activated during system testing due to human error. As a precautionary measure, 14 thermal blankets on the OMS pod are being replaced. There was no other damage.
