NOTE: Mission managers gave Columbia's crew a "go" for deorbit burn to occur at about 1:31 p.m. EDT, setting the vehicle on a course for landing at KSC's Shuttle Landing Facility today. Landing occurred on the first opportunity at 2:33 p.m. EDT on runway 33. (image)

About 3 hours, 30 minutes after touchdown, KSC ground crews will be ready to tow Columbia to Orbiter Processing Facility bay 1. Tow operations should take about one hour to complete. Earlier today, the Space Shuttle Endeavour was moved from OPF bay 1 to the VAB to make room for Columbia's arrival.

Once in the OPF, post-flight deservicing will begin. Shuttle managers plan to remove fuel cell No. 2 this weekend for shipment to the vendor and inspection. Fuel cell No. 1, having about 2500 hours upon return, will also be removed and replaced.

Preliminary post-landing inspections of Columbia reveal the tires and brakes to be in good condition. Tile damage will be assessed later tomorrow.

Columbia traveled 1.5 million miles on STS-83. This was the 36th KSC landing and the third time a Shuttle mission was shortened because of mechanical problems in the history of the Shuttle program.
