KENNEDY SPACE CENTER SPACE SHUTTLE STATUS REPORT
      TUESDAY, APRIL 15, 1997 (3:32 PM EDT)

MISSION: STS-84 -- 6th MIR DOCKING & SPACEHAB DM (image)
      • VEHICLE: Atlantis/OV-104
      • LOCATION: Orbiter Processing Facility bay 3
      • TARGET KSC LAUNCH DATE/TIME: May 15 at about 4:07 a.m.
      • LAUNCH WINDOW: 7-10 minutes
      • TARGET KSC LANDING DATE/TIME: May 24 at about 7:52 a.m.
      • MISSION DURATION: 9 days, 3 hours, 45 minutes (under review)
      • CREW: Precourt, Collins, Foale, Noriega, Lu, Clervoy, Kondakova
      • ORBITAL ALTITUDE and INCLINATION: 160 nautical miles/51.6 degrees

NOTE: Managers delayed yesterday's planned roll over activities to complete work on the nose landing gear strut. While the orbiter was being lowered, during weight and center of gravity checks, the strut retracted and demonstrated lower than normal pressure. The strut was repressurized and leak checks are complete and good.

Shuttle managers are also discussing the possibility of conducting inspections of "pyro can" bolts in Atlantis' aft compartment. The bolts, which hold an exterior covering for the pyrotechnic device that separates the orbiter from the external tank, had shown signs of slight elongation after a previous flight of the Space Shuttle Discovery (OV-103). A determination to conduct the inspection could delay Atlantis' roll over to the VAB by two days.

In the VAB, external tank and SRB postmating close-outs are in work and preparations continue for orbiter/ET mating this week.

STS-84 SCHEDULED OPERATIONAL MILESTONES (dates are target only):

      • Roll over to the VAB (tomorrow - pending resolution of bolt issue)
      • Orbiter mated to ET and SRBs (April 15)
      • Spacehab payload to the pad (April 18)
      • Orbiter to the pad (April 21)

      MISSION: STS-83R -- Microgravity Science Laboratory-1 (image)
      • VEHICLE: Columbia/OV-102 (image)
      • LOCATION: Orbiter Processing Facility bay 1
      • TARGET LAUNCH DATE/TIME: July 1 (under review)
      • LAUNCH WINDOW: 2 hours, 30 minutes
      • TARGET KSC LANDING DATE/TIME: July 16 (under review)
      • MISSION DURATION: 15 days, 17 hours
