STS-85 -- CRISTA-SPAS-2 (image)
NOTE: Discovery lifted off on time from Pad 39A at 10:41 a.m. EDT on mission STS-85. Carrying the CRISTA-SPAS payload and an experimental remote manipulator robot arm into orbit, Discovery will facilitate an in-depth study of the Earth's atmosphere and provide a test bed for technology demonstration. KSC's launch managers worked no major technical issues through the smooth 43-hour countdown. Weather forecasters closely monitored the cloud cover and visibility at KSC's throughout the countdown's final hours, but observed favorable conditions at the time of lift-off.
Once on station with the solid rocket boosters, the booster recovery ships will begin preparations to tow them back to the Cape Canaveral Air Station Saturday morning.
STS-85 crew members: Commander Curtis Brown, Pilot Kent Rominger, Mission Specialists Jan Davis, Robert Curbeam and Stephen Robinson; and Payload Specialist Bjarni Tryggvason
