STS-85 -- CRISTA-SPAS-2 (image)
NOTE: Preliminary post-launch inspections reveal only minor damage to the launch pad.
The solid rocket booster recovery ships are on station with the STS-85 boosters today. Both boosters were recovered and the right hand booster is ready to be towed. The aft integrated electronic assembly on the left-hand booster was dislodged upon impact with the water, but has been recovered. Yesterday, divers had trouble "dewatering" the left-hand booster, a necessary step that causes the booster to float horizontally for towing. This morning, they began work to reinstall the plug in order to obtain a proper seal. The recovery ships are expected to arrive at Hangar AF with boosters in tow Saturday morning.
STS-85 crew members: Commander Curtis Brown, Pilot Kent Rominger, Mission Specialists Jan Davis, Robert Curbeam and Stephen Robinson; and Payload Specialist Bjarni Tryggvason
STS-86 -- 7th MIR DOCKING & SPACEHAB DMNOTE: Orbiter weight and center of gravity tests are complete and Atlantis will be placed on the orbiter transfer vehicle today. Roll over to the Vehicle Assembly Building is scheduled for Monday at about 8:30 a.m. Verification tests of the global positioning system are complete and engineers will evaluate a data display issue, but this work is not a constraint to VAB roll over. In the VAB, preparations are on schedule for orbiter/external tank mating activities.
