NOTE: Rollout of Discovery to Pad 39A was halted today at about 8:25 a.m. when observers heard a "loud bang" and a 24 foot-long crack developed on the Mobile Launcher Platform (MLP) surface. The crack in the 1/2 inch steel plate runs from near the left hand SRB flame hole toward the closest corner of the MLP. (The corner at MLP sides 2 & 3). The event happened about one hour after first motion (7:23 a.m.).
Engineering analysis indicated that there were no load bearing concerns for the weight bearing structure of the MLP and the Shuttle was cleared to resume rollout to the pad. Additional precautionary measurements and validations will be conducted this weekend at the pad and repairs will be made where necessary. No impact to the overall schedule is expected.
