      NOTE: Replacement and loading of Discovery's Mass Memory Unit No. 1 is complete. Ordnance installation began last night and continues through noon today. Hypergolic propellant pressurization begins today and continues through Saturday. The orbiter's aft compartment close-outs continue as well. The orbiter's freon quick disconnect components have been replaced and leak checks will occur later today. Inspections of Discovery's oxidizer drain line are complete and revealed no issues. Launch countdown preparations continue on schedule.

      • TARGET KSC LANDING DATE/TIME: September 28 at about 5:51 a.m. (under review)
      • MISSION DURATION: 10 days, 4 hours, 9 minutes
      • CREW: Wetherbee, Bloomfield, Parazynski, Titov, Chretien, Lawrence, Wolf (up), Foale (down)
      • ORBITAL ALTITUDE and INCLINATION: 160 nautical miles/51.6 degrees

      NOTE: NASA managers announced yesterday that astronaut Wendy Lawrence has been replaced by her backup Dr. David Wolf for the next long duration stay on the Russian Mir space station. Lawrence will still fly on STS-86 and assist with Mir transfer activities. To enable Wolf to complete space walk training in Russia, the launch of Atlantis on mission STS-86 could be delayed approximately 10 days.

      Preparations for the Aug. 11 roll over of Atlantis to the Vehicle Assembly Building and aft compartment close-outs continue. Installation of thermal protection tiles for the forward reaction control system also continues. In the VAB, external tank/solid rocket booster close-outs proceed on schedule.

      • LAUNCH WINDOW: 2 hours, 30 minutes
      • TARGET KSC LANDING DATE/TIME: December 5 at 7:19 a.m.
      • MISSION DURATION: 15 days, 16 hours, 33 minutes
      • CREW: Kregel, Lindsey, Scott, Chawla, Doi, Kadenyuk
      • ORBITAL ALTITUDE and INCLINATION: 150 nautical miles/28.45 degrees

      NOTE: Technicians removed the MSL-1 Spacelab module late last night and returned it to the Operations and Checkout Building. Preparations to deservice freon coolant loop No. 2 are complete and the pump package is now slated for replacement. Deservicing of the orbiter's oxidizer cross-feed line will continue later today. Shuttle main engine removal is now slated for next week.
