STS-86 -- 7th MIR DOCKING & SPACEHAB DM
NOTE: Atlantis launched on time from Kennedy Space Center's Pad 39A at 10:34.19 p.m. EDT on mission STS-86. Following a one and half hour delay in external tank loading operations, KSC's launch managers worked no major technical issues through the remainder of the countdown.
Carrying a crew of seven and a Spacehab module filled with three-and-a-half tons of equipment and supplies, Atlantis chases the Russian space station Mir for a Saturday afternoon docking appointment. Mission Specialist David Wolf will become the sixth U.S. astronaut to live and work on the Russian outpost.
The solid rocket booster recovery ships were deployed on Wednesday afternoon. Once on station with the boosters, the recovery crew will begin preparations to tow them back to the Cape Canaveral Air Station on Saturday.
