Processing Note |

Shuttle managers today reviewed and confirmed plans
to replace Atlantis' faulty power drive unit (PDU) at Launch Pad 39A. KSC
managers will conduct a final review of the PDU replacement plan tomorrow
morning before full implementation begins. Preparation work continues at the pad
and managers expect PDU replacement to occur Wednesday without impacting the
April 24 launch date.
With hot fire tests on all three auxiliary power
units completed yesterday, workers began establishing access to the orbiter's
rudder/speed brake last night. (The replacement power drive unit was removed
from orbiter Columbia over the weekend and arrived at KSC this morning from
Palmdale, CA.) PDU electrical and mechanical connections are scheduled to occur
Thursday at Pad A. System retests are planned through Sunday.
The operation requires the Rotating Service
Structure to be retracted away from the vehicle and crane support to lift the
PDUs. The effort also calls for the freezing of 6 hydraulic lines leading to and
from the PDU. Super cold liquid nitrogen lines around the orbiter's titanium
hydraulic lines will freeze the hydraulic fluid, minimizing the chance of air
entering the lines. A Frequency Response Test is planned for Saturday and
Sunday, and will confirm a successful PDU replacement.
