Shuttle Processing Note
Following auxiliary power unit (APU) testing, technicians are replacing a relief valve on APU No. 3. Workers completed Discovery's fuel cell voltage tests yesterday. Technicians are preparing to replace a total of 10 thrusters on the left and right-hand orbital maneuvering system pods.

Routine post-flight inspections revealed chipping on two thrusters and moisture intrusion on two up-firing thrusters. The other six thrusters require replacement only because they are in a manifold configuration. After the thrusters are successfully replaced, managers will be able to assess the impact to the remainder of Discovery's processing flow.

Columbia/OV-102 Orbiter Maintenance Down Period Status

Shuttle program managers yesterday confirmed plans to bring orbiter Columbia back to KSC on Feb. 23, 2001. Columbia was initially scheduled to return in July of 2000, but extensive wiring inspections and repairs required more time than expected. The wiring delays subsequently affected the integration of several major orbiter modifications.

During this maintenance period, workers enhanced miles of orbiter wiring, outfitted Columbia with the multi-functional electronic display system or "glass cockpit", and installed an orbiter docking system. These are just a few of the many upgrades that NASA's oldest Shuttle has seen during its 2nd overhaul. Columbia has completed 26 space flights.
