Space Shuttle Discovery today completed the 5th Shuttle mission to the International Space Station with a landing at Edwards Air Force Base in California at 5 p.m. on orbit 202. At the conclusion of mission STS-92, Discovery and crew had traveled about 5.3 million statute miles.
The orbiter's main landing gear touched down on EAFB runway 22 at 5 p.m. With the aid of its drag chute, Discovery came to a complete stop at 5:01 p.m. Following vehicle safing and preliminary offloading efforts, workers will begin preparations for Discovery's transcontinental ferry flight back to KSC. Using the mate-demate device, workers plan to mate Discovery to the back of NASA's modified Boeing 747 on Monday, Oct. 30.
The astronaut flight crew will remain over night at EAFB and depart for their homes in Houston, TX, Wednesday. Discovery's landing at EAFB ended a streak of 23 consecutive Shuttle landings at KSC. The STS-92 landing marks the 46th landing at EAFB in Shuttle history. The last Shuttle landing at EAFB was on mission STS-76 in March of 1996.
Managers plan to begin a one-day ferry flight back to KSC at first light on Tuesday, Oct. 31. Ferry flight rules state that the orbiter and Shuttle Carrier Aircraft cannot fly through precipitation, thick clouds or high turbulence. There are also wind and temperature restrictions. The flight plan and duration may vary based upon weather conditions en route.
