Shuttle Processing
Following yesterday's landing of Shuttle Discovery at Edwards Air Force Base, CA, preliminary inspections reveal the orbiter to be in good condition. Discovery's lower surface sustained 85 total debris hits and only 14 hits had a dimension of 1-inch or larger. These hits are within the normal range. The orbiter's tires are reported to be in good condition as well.

Workers are preparing Discovery for the transcontinental ferry flight back to KSC. Managers currently plan to begin a one-day ferry flight back to KSC at first light on Tuesday, Oct. 31. Ferry flight rules state that the orbiter and Shuttle Carrier Aircraft cannot fly through precipitation, thick clouds or high turbulence. There are also wind and temperature restrictions. The flight plan and duration may vary based upon weather conditions en route.

Earlier this week, technicians completed Endeavour's weight and center of gravity tests. Yesterday, the orbiter was mated to the transport system and today at 4 a.m. Endeavour rolled out of Orbiter Processing Facility bay 2 and into the VAB transfer aisle. Workers in the VAB are preparing to lift Endeavour into high bay 1 where it will be mated to the external tank and solid rocket boosters. The full Space Shuttle stack is scheduled for roll out to Launch Pad 39B on Tuesday, Oct. 31.
