SPACE SHUTTLE COLUMBIA/OV-102 FERRY FLIGHT

COLUMBIA -- Space Shuttle orbiter Columbia, currently located in Palmdale, Calif., will remain there through today and not begin its ferry flight back to KSC any earlier than Tuesday morning. Rain and thick clouds in the California high desert are prohibiting a departure today. Managers will meet again tomorrow morning to discuss departure plans and assess local weather conditions, as well as weather conditions through the flight path back to Florida. A two-day ferry is still planned, resulting in a no earlier than Wednesday arrival at KSC.

ATLANTIS -- Meanwhile, processing continues for the orbiter Atlantis at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. Atlantis is also being prepared for its return ferry flight back to KSC following last week's mission STS-98 landing on the desert lakebed. Atlantis will be mated to its modified 747 tomorrow and be in a position to begin its flight later Tuesday. The same weather pattern delaying Columbia's departure will affect Atlantis' departure. Managers are currently discussing ferry flight plans for both vehicles.
