SPACE SHUTTLE ORBITERS ATLANTIS AND COLUMBIA FERRY FLIGHT STATUS

Space Shuttle orbiters Atlantis and Columbia have both departed California atop their respective 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, and have touched down safely at their overnight layover locations.

Columbia departed Palmdale, Calif., at about 2 p.m. EST and arrived at Dyess AFB, Texas, at about 5:40 p.m. EST.

Atlantis left Edwards AFB, Calif., at about 2:35 p.m. EST and arrived at Altus AFB at about 5:45 p.m. EST.

Each orbiter ferry flight team will evaluate weather conditions tonight and tomorrow morning for their continued trips back to KSC. Weather permitting, both vehicles could be back at KSC by early Friday afternoon.

Columbia is returning from a 17-month long modification and refurbishment process as part of a routine maintenance plan.

Atlantis is being returned to KSC following last week's Edward Air Force Base landing concluding Shuttle mission STS-98.

Poor weather in California prevented departure until today.
