The STS-108 mission has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 4 to allow sufficient time for the Expedition Three crew on the Space Station to successfully complete a spacewalk on Monday to clear an obstruction on the latching mechanism on the Russian Progress supply vehicle. At Pad 39-B, the launch team made preparations for a 96-hour turnaround for the launch of Shuttle Endeavour at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
The seven-member STS-108 crew will remain at KSC through the weekend. The commander and pilot will fly in the Shuttle training aircraft several times throughout the weekend as the remainder of the crew review their flight plans.
Today the rotating service structure was moved back around the vehicle, the Orbiter mid-body umbilical was reconnected and a series of Shuttle safety walk downs were conducted. The vehicle will remain powered up in launch configuration during the turnaround process in a hold at T-11 hours. Booster retrieval ships Freedom Star and Liberty Star are scheduled to return to their berths at Hangar AF at 9 p.m. tonight. They will deploy again to the impact area on Monday.
On Sunday, the pad will be cleared at 4 p.m. to start reservicing the on-board fuel cells. The rotating service structure will be moved to the parked position at 9:30 p.m. Monday night and the countdown will resume at T-11 hours at 2:47 a.m. Tuesday. The countdown will enter a one-hour built-in-hold at T-6 hours, and a shuttle manager's meeting will be held to assess status prior to starting propellant tanking at 8:47 a.m.
The long-range forecast is favorable with a 20 percent chance of weather prohibiting the launch on Tuesday. In the booster recovery area 200 miles east of Jacksonville the ships will encounter 4-6 foot seas and easterly winds 12-16 knots. |
