2002 Year at a Glance Status Reports June Status Reports

Shuttle Status:  The engineering investigation continues of the Main Propulsion System (MPS) liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen flow liners after tiny cracks were found on all four Space Shuttle orbiters liners. Due to those inspections, mission managers have changed all launch dates to under review. (The soonest any Shuttle could be ready for launch is currently estimated to be Sept. 26, 2002.) NASA is continuing its full review to determine the cause of the cracks found on the orbiter's flow liners and to develop an appropriate remedy. Various engineering teams across the country continue to analyze data to determine the appropriate course of action that will lead to the resumption of safe launches. Meanwhile, processing work continues in parallel for Columbia, Atlantis and Endeavour.

By the end of the week, a decision is expected to select the best repair options. A decision is currently expected by the end of the month to proceed with the repairs or to fly as is.
